Description: Responsibilities of Interns: Each year, Catholic Charities provides support to low-income families in Lake County by collecting and distributing donated school supplies. The project provides new backpacks and school supplies to children starting kindergarten through high school who reside in Lake County and whose family is participating in Catholic Charities Programs. For children suffering through poverty, school supplies are a luxury that many go without. The intern will be responsible for running the program, start to finish. This involves planning and scheduling; interacting with Catholic Charities managers and outside agencies to identify children in need; connecting with prior donors and publicizing for new donors; organizing volunteers to prepare and distribute the backpacks; and reporting on results.

Special skills required/desired: The ideal candidate will be a good planner who is detail oriented but is also able to work with people. Basic word processing, spreadsheet and email skills are needed.

Interns(s) in this position will learn about: The breadth of services provided in Lake County and the impact they have on the children. A “free” education may be provided to all children, but a child who goes to school without basic supplies is at a disadvantage. Having a new backpack with new supplies gives them the tools they need and helps relieve the stress of starting a new school year.

Learning Objectives:
1. Project management. Creating an organized plan to accomplish a task.
2. Business etiquette. Creating emails that communicate the right message to the right people. Scheduling and conducting meetings that accomplish their purpose.
3. Marketing. Creating communication tools to attract donors and inspire them to take action.

Trained/Mentored: The intern will review materials used in prior years including a School Supply Program Manual. S/he will be mentored by the Volunteer Coordinator who is ultimately responsible for the program.

Special Requirements: Basic word processing, spreadsheet and email skills are needed. Bilingual/Spanish a plus.

Paid/Unpaid: Unpaid

Hours available to work: 25-30 hours each week, Mon-Fri, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

Work Location: 671 S Lewis Ave, Waukegan, IL 60085. One or two offsite school fairs may be requested.
