Join Catholic Charities as we celebrate National Mentoring Month! The public is invited to an informal open house reception in our Lake County offices to learn more about becoming a mentor through our Youth Mentorship Program. The reception will feature light refreshments and attendees will be able to talk to current adult mentors about their experiences working with youth ages 9-12.

When: 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25
Where: Catholic Charities, 671 S. Lewis Ave., Waukegan
RSVP: Call (847) 782-4224 or email blucas@catholiccharities.net.

The Lake County Youth Mentorship Program pairs youth ages 9-12 from Waukegan with volunteer mentors, who can serve as positive role models, encourage good decision-making, and be a friend during times of need. Youth who participate in the program learn how to set goals, process difficult emotions, improve communication skills, develop new hobbies, and improve self-confidence.

“There are so many children growing up in very challenging circumstances,” said Beth Sheehan-Lucas, Program Coordinator of the Youth Mentorship Program. “This program truly provides an opportunity to make a difference.”

Interested mentors must be at least 21 years old and willing to meet with their mentee for two hours each week for at least one year. They must also have reliable transportation and allow Catholic Charities to conduct a thorough criminal background check.

Potential volunteers and interested youth are encouraged to call (847) 782-4224 for more information.
